Job Summary
The ideal candidate will be responsible for the design, development, testing, and continuous improvement of commercial ice-making machines and refrigeration systems. This role requires hands-on product engineering experience, strong CAD skills, and a solid understanding of thermodynamics, refrigeration, sheet metal, and manufacturing processes.
The Design Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including R&D, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and service teams to develop innovative, reliable, and cost-effective ice machine solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop commercial ice-making equipment including cubers, flakers, nugget, and pearl ice machines.
- Create 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and BOMs using SolidWorks or similar CAD platforms.
- Support new product development from concept through production launch.
- Perform thermal, airflow, structural, and performance evaluations for refrigeration systems.
- Work on evaporator, condenser, compressor, water circulation, and dispensing system integration.
- Conduct prototype testing, validation, and troubleshooting of ice machine systems.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to optimize product manufacturability and assembly efficiency.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives related to performance, reliability, energy efficiency, and cost reduction.
- Ensure designs comply with UL, NSF, CE, DOE, and refrigeration safety standards.
- Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for field or production issues.
- Coordinate with suppliers and vendors for component development and qualification.
- Prepare engineering documentation, technical reports, specifications, and test procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- 3–7 years of experience in product design or refrigeration equipment engineering.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent 3D CAD software.
- Strong understanding of refrigeration cycles, heat transfer, and HVAC/R systems.
- Experience with sheet metal, plastics, fabrication, and electromechanical assemblies.
- Familiarity with DFMEA, GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and engineering change processes.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability (DFM).
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing commercial foodservice or refrigeration equipment.
- Knowledge of refrigerants including R290 and environmentally responsible systems.
- Familiarity with UL/NSF certification processes.
- Hands-on prototype build and testing experience.
- Experience with ERP/PDM systems.
